Anotace: Since the political change of regime in 1990, tendencies previously characteristic of Western European urban areas, such as city centre regeneration, revitalization, gained momentum in post-communist cities as well. The ruined city centres’ renewal aimed at the creation of liveable surroundings. The goal of this article is to explore how residents of Debrecen, East Hungary, viewed the regeneration of the city centre, what this process meant to them and what kind of positive and negative results could be observed in relation to the surroundings’ alteration.
