Anotace: The author of the present paper summarizes her longitudinal research of foreign language

course book (sets), as well as her experience as a course book evaluator and writer at various
levels and stages of language learning and teaching. The author’s attention has been paid to
the functions of a course book highlighting those which reflect the specific features of a foreign
language. Then she paid some attention to the learning styles and learning strategies stressing
the significant role of text and context, as well as other verbal and non-verbal parts of the units.
The author concludes the paper by presenting some criteria which may help a teacher to choose
the „best“ course book for his/her students.
