Anotace: OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the study were to find new facts about the beginning of social

work training in Russia, to analyse historical documents concerning the development of the
Psychoneurological Institute under the leadership of V. M. Bekhterev. THEORETICAL BASE:
formational approach, world-history theory. METHODS: General scientific methods: analysis,
synthesis, methodological principles of historicism, objectivity, and consistency. OUTCOMES:
The article summarizes the experience of the Psychoneurological Institute as the “first social institute” in Russia, reveals the content, main directions, forms, and methods of the system
of training specialists in public charity in Russia at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries. New,
previously unpublished, archival sources were introduced into the scientific field. The results of the
study were a deeper understanding of the history of social work and inclusion of historical research
into the training programs of social workers. SOCIAL WORK IMPLICATIONS: The article
can be used in the course “History of social work” and can be included into manuals for universities
of a social profile. The historical findings will help to enrich the history of social work and increase
the prestige of the social work as a profession.
