The paper focuses on two English linking devices, if and when. Referring to ways
in which these conjunctions are presented in English teaching materials and referring to the Czech equivalents of these conjunctions, the author uses the lyrics
of a popular Czech song to make Czech native speakers aware of the fact that
they can use their already acquired linguistic knowledge in the process of learning
a foreign language.
